Petrobras finds second oil-bearing interval in Morpho well offshore Amapá
Petrobras has identified another oil-bearing interval in the Morpho exploratory well, marking a second discovery within the same well in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, offshore Amapá.
The discovery was announced on October 2 after drilling continued into deeper exploratory intervals at Morpho, officially identified as 1-BRSA-1405-APS, in Block FZA-M-59.
The well is located approximately 175 kilometers off the coast of Amapá, in ultra-deep water at a depth of 2,886 meters.
Morpho had already encountered hydrocarbons in August. Petrobras continued drilling after that initial discovery to evaluate deeper formations, leading to the identification of the new oil-bearing interval.
According to the company, the latest occurrence was identified through electrical well logs, indications in rock and fluid samples collected during drilling operations.
The distinction is important: this is not a new well or a new field, but another discovery in a deeper interval of the same exploratory well.
Laboratory analyses of the new samples are still underway. The information will be integrated with the other data collected during drilling to improve Petrobras’ understanding of the petroleum systems and resource potential of the Foz do Amazonas Basin.
Petrobras has not disclosed resource volumes, reserve estimates or an assessment of commerciality for the new interval.
For the discovery announced in August, however, subsequent laboratory analyses have confirmed that the oil encountered is of good quality.
Petrobras will now complete drilling activities at Morpho and continue evaluating the formations identified.
The company operates and currently holds a 100% interest in Block FZA-M-59. The block was originally awarded in Brazil’s 11th ANP licensing round in 2013.

The new interval provides additional geological information on the petroleum system in the Foz do Amazonas Basin while the scale and potential commercial significance of the discovery remain under evaluation.
